Zambia

Zambia is a count in the southern part of Africa. The country is not very big, being about the size of Texas or France. However, the country is very famous for the great safari opportunities it offers to its tourists. Here you can see one of the world’s seven natural wonders, the Victoria Falls.  However the country is very poor and its population is made up of several different tribes. Zambia, even though one of the poorest countries in the world, is visited by many tourists who want to find about the history of the country and who also want to see the wonderful sights that the country has to offer.

Things to do in Zambia

Once you get to Zambia, it’s a great experience to see one of the many festivals which take place all year round. Planning ahead is quite impossible though, because the dates and places of these festivals change. However, once you get there, you’ll be able to stop at anything that looks like a festival and take a look. Some of the most popular festivals to which tourists can go are:

  • Kazanga. One of the oldest Zambian traditions, this festival is held in Kaoma and it represents a ceremony which was celebrated by the Nkoya people over 500 years ago. This ceremony is still performed, as the Nkoya people still celebrate all their traditions through music and dance.
  • Kumboka. Celebrating the migration of the Lozi king to a more fertile place, this festival is held in the months of March or April in both Lealui and Limulunga.
  • Ncwala. This festival celebrates the appearance of the first fruits of the season, on the 24th of February, near Chipata. At this festival, the Ngoni chief tastes the fruit and then drinks the blood of a bull.
  • Kulamba. Also near Chipata, this festival is held in August. It is the Chewa thanksgiving, which is very famous for its Nyau secret society dancers.
  • Shimunenga. This is a ceremony to show devotion to the ancestors and it takes place once a year between the months of September and October. This is the beginning of the new year and the end of the old.

Other things you can visit while in Zambia:

  • The Blue Lagoon National Park
  • The Kafue National Park
  • The Lochinvar National Park
  • The Lower Zambezi National Park
  • The North Luangwa National Park
  • The Nsumbu National Park
  • The South Luangwa National Park
  • Victoria Falls
  • The West Lunga National Park

Getting There and Getting Around

Getting into Zambia can be a little strange. Even the authorities don’t know who should get a visa, who needs a visa or whether or not the visa can be obtained in the country.
