Accor Hospitality group has just inaugurated in Tanger, Morocco, the Ibis Tanger City Center. The 196-room hotel is also its 900th Ibis hotel worldwide and the 100 th Accor hotel on the African continent.
This opening of this second Ibis hotel in Tanger is significant in many respects. Morocco shows a strong potential for budget hotels niche, a market where the competition is just starting to bustle in the Kingdom, thanks to a growing domestic demand.
As an example of this competition, more Golden Tulip hotels, a Starwood Capital brand, are planned to open within the next three years. This brand which positions on mid to high scale segments already operates 5 hotels in Morocco.
In 70 % increase during the last decade, the domestic demand now represents 22 % of overnight stays in Morocco. A fact that is explained by two main drivers: an active role played by the Moroccan authorities, putting emphasis on domestic travellers in its tourist policy, and the increasing offer of low cost airline companies.
