Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has once again confirmed his commitment to tourism as one of the top priorities of his country. In a meeting attended by UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai, on the occasion of the 10th Tourism Convention Day, the Moroccan Ministry of Tourism set the stage for the official launch of Morocco’s ‘Tourism Development Strategy Vision 2020’ (Marrakesh, Morocco, 30 November).
In 2001, King Mohammed VI had declared a new national tourism policy for Morocco, ‘Vision 2010’- a long-term plan to accelerate the development of tourism. Strong tourism policies and actions followed soon thereafter. These included a well laid out product development policy, the liberalization of air transport and improved promotional efforts that substantially helped increasing international tourism in Morocco.
In less than a decade the tourist traffic almost doubled and is expected to be more than nine million in 2010. In the meantime, earnings from global tourism went up by three times. It’s significant to note despite global economic turndown that affected tourism in 2009, Morocco remained a favoured destination of North Africa and witnessed an increase of international travellers by six percent.
Such an outstanding success helped Morocco creating economic wealth and created employment opportunities for its people.
Also, at the same meeting UNWTO, Morocco’s Ministry of Tourism and the National Hotel Industry Federation signed an agreement, outlining support for putting into force a new hotel classification system in Morocco.
