It may take up to twenty seconds for your golf ball to hit the ground! Thank God, it doesn’t defy gravity! Want to experience that in Africa?
Legend Golf and Safari Resort’s is the name of the place. Opened in 2009, it’s located in Entabeni Safari Conservancy in South Africa’s Limpopo Province. Quite easily one of the most astounding golf courses on the planet.
Eighteen different champions of golf designed a hole each for this amazing golf course in South Africa. Get impressed by the names: Immelman (hole 1), Jim Furyk (hole 3), Bemhard Langer (hole 4), Mike Weir (hole 7), Camilo Villegas (hole 8), Padraig-Harrington (hole 10), Vijay Singh (hole 15), Sergio Garcia (hole 16), Kj Choi (hole 17), Retief Goosen (hole 18).
It is the longest course in South Africa: usually 7,154 yards (4Miles) but can be extended to 8,473 (4.8 miles) yards for tournaments. With 5 tee markers on each hole, this course is designed for amateurs and professionals alike. Here are the other parameters:
- Difference in height: 430m
- Horizontal distance between the mountain and the green’s end: 400m
- Horizontal distance between the mountain and the fairway: 280m
- Duration of ball flight 20 seconds!
Due consideration was given to environmental concerns while designing this course. As a result most of the original plant life is still in place, as if the course were built around the landscape!
But what distinguish this golf course are not the amazing first 18 holes, it’s the bonus 19th hole. The Legends Golf is known for a remarkable breathtaking hole- the Xtreme 19th hole. This award-winning jewel of the course is a par 3 hole that the golfers can access using a helicopter only. The tee box is set high in the Hanglip Mountains and you may choose from among the three boxes on the escarpment. The highest box being 430 meters above the green is 630 yards away. That’s how the ball takes that much time to land. High-tech cameras are installed to capture the flight of the ball with stewards waiting down below to mark the landing of the ball.
The green is shaped like Africa, and the fairway is contoured to funnel the ball towards the green, away from the African brush. It is an exciting hole that has no equal in the rest of the golf world. Golfers have the opportunity to play the hole by itself or add it as a 19th hole to the course. A hole in one on the 19th hole earns you $1 million dollars!
