Vamizi Lodge is a resort in Mozambique. It defines ‘castaway chic’ and is basically ‘one big spa’ offering total relaxation. But it is also a conservation project and wildlife reserve. Scientists saying that biodiversity there is simply "amazing", Vamizi Island indeed offers a unique glimpse of the beauty and biodiversity of the East African coast.
Ecotourism in practice
This is not a typical ‘green’ or ‘Eco’ tourist resort in Mozambique boasting token recycling schemes and solar panels. This is Ecotourism in practice: providing financial support to local people, working to build environmental awareness and promote conservation work. At Vamizi, communities work to protect over 46 types of coral, over 400 species of fish, 112 species of tropical birds, samango monkeys, turtles, coconut crabs and other scarce animal species.
People started to settle on Vamizi to escape civil war in Mozambique and today 1,000 villagers struggle to beat poverty and improve their way of life. Opened in 2005, the Vazimi Lodge now aims to provide work and support local conservation initiatives through the Maluane Project.
An "Eco Luxury" spot
The thirteen timber villas at Vamizi Island Lodge provide the perfect secluded and romantic getaway for discerning travellers. Here, the concept of luxury is not modern conveniences and sleek design, but more about exclusive and authentic Island life. Expect open plan rooms, natural breezes, stepping out directly onto the sand and private ocean. Each of the villas is generous in size – over 170 square metres – and furnished with natural materials such as timber floors, muslin coverings and marble.
The Dining Experience
There is a dining experience to fit any mood. Guests can try the usual daytime buffet at the Muntu Nkulu ‘castaway’ restaurant, or more formal open dining in the Main Lodge. For more indulgent luxury, try a shipwrecked picnic on a deserted beach. In the evenings, the restaurant diners spill onto the beach for grills, surf-fresh seafood and more elaborate dishes. Expect more glamour, with cocktails and fine wines at the bar and food under lantern light and the stars.
Activities
Guests can relax in the open beach villas, or try some energy and body treatments at the Vamizi Lodge Spa. Shiatsu, Reiki and Cranio-sacral therapy, or Ashtanga yoga are available all day. For that unique experience, guests can opt for beauty therapies using natural recipes borrowed from locals – anything from minerals ground from Vamizi rocks, to seaweed masks and sea salt scrubs.
Vamizi is superb for Scuba diving. PADI dive instructors can guide guests to spectacular dive sites - including a sheer walled canyon a kilometre deep and coral habitats that have been deemed amongst the healthiest reef systems in the world. The deep-sea fishing is amongst the best on the East Africa coast. There are other options for wildlife loving or adventure-seeking travellers including snorkelling trips, whale watching expeditions, boating, kayaking activities and even castaway picnics and bird watching.
