Nine Ghanaian hospitality firms were judged the best out of 13 award categories at the just concluded West African Tourism and Hospitality Awards in Accra.

 

The maiden ceremony is planned to cheer superior standards in the hospitality industry in the West African sub-region.

 

Mr Adedayo Adesugba, originator of the awards, pointed out that the flow of tourists to the sub-region was very low, though the continent boasted of the best tourist attractions.

 

"We are therefore offering these ceremonial awards to distinguish those who are raising standards while prompting others to back up," he said.

 

The Ghanaian establishments that won the award include: Labadi Beach hotel, for being judged as the best Five Star Hotel in West Africa, Citizen Kofi Entertainment Centre in Accra, got the best Membership Club award as also the quick Service Restaurant categories, Cook Art Ghana was declared as the best Tourism Project while its sister company Trafix Catering retained popularity in the quick Service Restaurant Category.

 

Other award winners were the Holy Trinity Spar at Sogakope in the Volta Region, which was adjudged the best Spar; the award for the Best Travel Agent went to Land Tours Ghana ltd, whereas Avis Rent A Car Ghana was awarded for being the best car rental category.

 

Paloma Hotel was declared as the best budget hotel, while La Palm Beach won the award for being the best Conference and Convention Centre.

 

The other categories won by the Nigerian counterparts include: Wavecrest College of Catering and Hospitality Management, awarded the best Educational Institution of the Year, Southern Sun, qualified for the award of the best four Star hotel, the best Travel Online Portal went to Holidays and Cash of Lagos Nigeria, while Marmundo Seafoods was named the Best Fine Dinning Restaurant.

 

Pinacle Royal of Nigeria was judged as the Best New Hotel; Best Boutique Hotel went to Jorany Hotel Calabar Nigeria, while Eko Tourist Beach in Lagos Nigeria was declared the Best Three Star and the Best Eco-Friendly hotel.

 

On October 16, all the winners met at Citizen Kofi Centre for a networking session.

 

The award package also included a hugely discounted ticket from South African Airways, one of the sponsors of the ceremony.
