Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport , Mauritius

Travelers from Mauritius will be required to pay additional tax by way of the newly introduced Terminal Expansion Fee. The government of Mauritius had originally planned it from March this year, and has levied it on air tickets issued from October 1, 2010 for travel from November 1. Here is the fee structure: €11 (R105) for adults and €6 (R57) for children under 12 for long-haul departures and €3,10 (R30) for adults and €1,6 (R15) for children for regional departures from Mauritius to Réunion, Madagascar, Seychelles, Comoros, Kenya and South Africa.

The purpose of collecting the Terminal Expansion Fee is to fund the expansion of the airport that includes construction of a new terminal. The new palm-shaped terminal will be built to accommodate the A380, and more than four million passengers with 52 check-in counters. The additional construction will be spread over an area of 57 000 square metres. Of this, nearly 3 400 square metres will be earmarked for commercial activities whereas 2 200 square metres will house lounges. Construction has already started in March and is expected to be over towards the end of 2012.

The environmental and ecological features of the project conform to the concept ‘Maurice, Ile Durable’. (Mauritius Sustainable Island). The terminal will utilize solar energy derived from photovoltaic cells and will also employ rainwater harvesting.
